Custom Conformal Coating Masking Boots

Reusable masking solutions that reduce labour, improve consistency and lower coating process cost

SCH Services designs and supplies custom, reusable conformal coating masking boots for protecting connectors, components and keep-out areas during liquid conformal coating and Parylene coating processes. They are used as a faster, cleaner and more repeatable alternative to traditional masking materials such as tape, dots and liquid latex.

We do not just supply masking boots โ€” we use them daily in our own coating services. This means our boot designs are developed around real production issues including masking speed, leakage control, operator consistency, de-masking time, cleaning, reuse life and coating compatibility.

Boot design, fit and expected reuse life will vary depending on whether the application is liquid conformal coating or Parylene masking. In liquid coating, boots normally act as reusable masks. In Parylene coating, they may also need to act as sealing gaskets, which places greater demands on fit, compression and durability.

For applications involving connector interfaces and protected contact areas, see our guide to protecting connector interfaces without conformal coating them.

In suitable repeat-production applications, masking boots can significantly reduce masking and de-masking time compared with manual tape-based methods.

Why Choose Masking Boots?

Conventional masking techniques can be effective, but they are often labour-intensive, operator-dependent and slow. Custom masking boots provide a practical alternative where the same connectors, components or keep-out areas need to be protected repeatedly.

  • Faster application and removal โ€” often up to 4โ€“5 times quicker than tape in suitable applications
  • Improved sealing consistency โ€” helps reduce coating ingress, edge bleed and masking variation
  • Reusable protection โ€” typically suitable for repeated use in liquid conformal coating applications
  • Lower total masking cost โ€” reduces labour input, rework risk and consumable waste
  • Production proven โ€” used every day within SCHโ€™s own coating services
Engineering note: Masking boots are not always designed to work as liquid-tight seals. In spray coating, some boots are used primarily as shields to block coating from reaching the connector. In dip coating and Parylene masking, the same style of protection may need to act more like a sealing gasket. Read why a connector masking boot does not always prevent coating ingress.

Going deeper: reusable masking boots are not just faster to apply. They are used to improve sealing consistency, reduce operator variation and lower total masking cost in production.

Typical Applications

Custom masking boots are most useful where the same feature needs to be protected repeatedly across batches or production runs. Common applications include:

  • Connectors and terminal blocks
  • Headers, sockets and contact areas
  • Test points and electrical interfaces
  • Switches, sensors and selected components
  • Defined keep-out areas on repeat PCB assemblies

When Masking Boots May Not Be the Best Option

Masking boots are not always the correct choice. For very low-volume work, simple one-off masking areas or large irregular keep-out zones, masking tape, dots, die-cut shapes or liquid masking may still be more practical. SCH can help assess whether boots are commercially justified based on geometry, coating type, production volume and handling requirements.

This honest selection process matters because the best masking method is the one that reduces process risk and total cost, not simply the one that looks fastest on paper.

Request a Quote

To provide a tailored quote, we will need:

  • Connector or component part code, so the geometry can be identified
  • Estimated production volume

To speed up the review, it also helps to include:

  • A photo of the PCB, with masking areas marked where possible
  • Confirmation of coating type, such as acrylic, silicone, polyurethane or Parylene
  • Any restrictions around coating ingress, contact areas or inspection acceptance

Reusable masking boots are designed for repeated use and can often exceed 100โ€“200 cycles in liquid conformal coating applications when correctly specified, handled and cleaned. Service life will vary depending on coating type, geometry and process conditions.

Masking Boots are 4โ€“5 Times Quicker than Tape

In a side-by-side trial, SCH compared traditional tape masking with custom masking boots on a PCB with multiple masking points. The result was dramatically faster processing and major labour savings.

Case Study: Diamond MT (USA)

โ€œWe initially tried SCHโ€™s masking boots for the price savings, but quickly realised the boots lasted over 200% longer than expected. We switched immediately. Working with a supplier that truly understands coatings made all the difference.โ€ โ€” Sean Horn, Director, Diamond MT

Conformal Coating Masking Training

Masking is one of the most labour-intensive and risk-prone stages of conformal coating. SCH Services delivers hands-on training covering masking boots, shapes, tapes and dots. Your operators learn best practices for speed, consistency and preventing leakage or defects.

This module can be delivered standalone or as part of a complete conformal coating training programme. Courses are tailored to your facility, linked to recognised coating standards where relevant and focused on practical, repeatable results.

FAQs โ€“ Custom Conformal Coating Masking Boots

What are conformal coating masking boots?

Conformal coating masking boots are precision-moulded, reusable silicone caps used to protect connectors, components and defined areas during coating. They replace tape, dots and liquid mask with a faster, cleaner and more repeatable masking method.

Can masking boots be used for both liquid and Parylene coatings?

Yes. Masking boots can be designed for both liquid conformal coating and Parylene processes. However, the way they are used differs. In liquid coating they act as masks, while in Parylene they often act as sealing gaskets, which places greater demands on fit and durability.

Learn more about masking boot applications and compatibility.

How many times can you reuse a masking boot?

Reusable masking boots are designed for repeated use and can often exceed 100โ€“200 cycles in liquid conformal coating applications when correctly specified, handled and cleaned. Service life will vary depending on coating type, geometry and process conditions.

Do masking boots last as long in Parylene coating processes?

No. In Parylene applications, masking boots act as sealing gaskets rather than simple masks. This increases mechanical stress and sealing requirements, so reuse life is significantly lower and may be limited to a small number of cycles depending on the application.

How much time can you save compared to tape masking?

Masking boots are typically much faster to apply and remove than tape. In many applications, this can reduce masking time by several times and significantly lower labour input, especially in repeat production.

What do I need to request a quote?

At minimum, we require:

  • Connector or component part code, so the geometry can be identified
  • Estimated production volume

To improve speed and accuracy, it also helps to provide:

  • A photo of the PCB with masking areas identified
  • Confirmation of coating type, such as acrylic, silicone, polyurethane or Parylene

Do masking boots prevent coating leaks and defects?

They significantly reduce the risk. A correctly specified boot provides a consistent mechanical seal, helping prevent coating ingress, edge bleed and contamination commonly seen with tape-based masking.

Can I request a sample?

Yes. Sample packs are available so you can evaluate masking performance, fit and handling in your own process before committing to production volumes.

Are masking boots proven in real production?

Yes. SCH masking boots are used globally and within our own conformal coating and Parylene coating services, ensuring they are tested and refined in real production environments.
