Description

Natural, controlled media for gentle surface preparation

Walnut shell blasting media is a natural, biodegradable micro-abrasive widely used for light cleaning, surface preparation, and controlled removal of conformal coatings from printed circuit boards (PCBs).

It provides a balanced combination of effectiveness and gentleness β€” stronger than sodium bicarbonate, but significantly less aggressive than aluminium oxide β€” making it well suited to sensitive electronics rework, refurbishment, and selective de-coating tasks.

Why choose walnut shell media?

  • βœ” Natural and biodegradable β€” environmentally friendly abrasive
  • βœ” Low dusting β€” cleaner workstation than many mineral abrasives
  • βœ” Gentle on substrates β€” reduces risk to solder mask and fine features
  • βœ” Effective cleaning action β€” removes residues, light coatings, and surface contamination
  • βœ” Compatible with micro-abrasive systems such as Vaniman ProBlast

Typical applications

  • Light removal of acrylic and urethane conformal coatings
  • Surface preparation before inspection or rework
  • Cleaning of solder joints, pads, and connector areas
  • Selective de-coating for test point access
  • General electronics refurbishment and cleaning

How it compares to other media

  • Versus Sodium Bicarbonate: more effective removal with slightly higher abrasion
  • Versus VanAcrylic: softer cutting action and slower on thick coatings
  • Versus Aluminium Oxide: far gentler and safer for sensitive boards

Supply format

  • Material: Crushed walnut shell (natural, biodegradable)
  • Grade: 240 grit
  • Pack sizes: 15 lb and 50 lb bags
  • Use case: Micro-abrasive blasting for electronics
  • Compatibility: Suitable for Vaniman ProBlast systems (including ProBlast 3 ESD)

Recommended system for best results

Walnut shell performs best when paired with a dedicated micro-abrasive system and proper dust capture. For clean, controlled, and repeatable results we recommend the:

πŸ‘‰ Vaniman ProBlast 3 ESD Complete System (with StoneVac II)

  • Stable ESD control for sensitive electronics
  • Consistent airflow and media delivery
  • HEPA dust capture for a cleaner workstation
  • Turnkey setup β€” unpack, connect, and start work
