Vaniman Blasting Media

Vaniman micro-abrasive blasting media are engineered for controlled, selective removal of Parylene and liquid conformal coatings from PCBs and electronic assemblies.

When used with the Vaniman ProBlast 3 ESD, these media deliver predictable removal rates while helping protect sensitive components, solder joints, and substrates.

SCH Services uses these exact media types in our own conformal coating and Parylene rework operations β€” so every option offered here is proven in real, day-to-day production.

Media available in this category

  • VanAcrylic 80/100 grit – 1, 5 and 30 lb bags β€” purpose-designed thermoset acrylic media for fast, controllable, and ESD-safe removal of Parylene and liquid conformal coatings.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate 50–100 micron – 1, 15 and 50 lb bags β€” softer, low-aggression media for rapid stripping where minimal surface disturbance is required.
  • Walnut Shell 240 grit – 15 and 50 lb bags β€” organic, biodegradable media for gentler cleaning and delicate substrates.

How to choose the right media

  • For Parylene rework: VanAcrylic is generally the best starting point.
  • For liquid conformal coatings: VanAcrylic or Sodium Bicarbonate usually perform very well.
  • For tougher or highly cross-linked coatings: Aluminium Oxide may be required.
  • For sensitive surfaces: Walnut shell offers the gentlest option.
  • For ESD control: Use with the ProBlast 3 ESD and a suitable dust collector.

Media Comparison (Electronics Rework)

VanAcrylic (Acrylic Plastic)

  • Mohs hardness: 3.5–4
  • Grain shape: Angular
  • Ideal applications: Conformal coating removal, delicate paint removal
  • Media sizes: 80–100 grit
  • Recommended tank: 50–100 Β΅m
  • Recommended nozzle tip: Large Violet

βœ… Best starting point: Parylene rework and general conformal coating removal on populated PCBs.

Sodium Bicarbonate

  • Mohs hardness: 2.5
  • Grain shape: Angular
  • Ideal applications: Cutting, deburring, texturing (gentle)
  • Media sizes: 50–100 micron
  • Recommended tank: 50–100 Β΅m
  • Recommended nozzle tip: Medium Green

βœ… Best starting point: Very delicate boards, thin coatings, or where minimal surface disturbance is critical β€” plus any application where easy post-process cleaning is required, as sodium bicarbonate residue can simply be rinsed away with DI water.

Walnut Shell

  • Mohs hardness: 3
  • Grain shape: Smooth angular
  • Ideal applications: Cleaning, preparing
  • Media sizes: ~100–250 micron
  • Recommended tank: 100–150 Β΅m
  • Recommended nozzle tip: Large Black

βœ… Best starting point: Light cleaning, residue removal, and gentle surface preparation rather than full de-coating.

Aluminium Oxide

  • Mohs hardness: 8–9
  • Grain shape: Angular
  • Ideal applications: Cutting, deburring (high aggression)
  • Media sizes: ~25–250 micron
  • Recommended tank: 50–100 Β΅m (match size range to tank)
  • Recommended nozzle tip: Extra Large Red

⚠️ Use with caution: Best for very tough, highly cross-linked coatings or metal substrates β€” higher risk to solder mask on populated PCBs.

Tip + tank selection matters: Using the wrong combination can cause poor flow or blockages.
Tell us your media choice and application and we’ll confirm the correct setup.

Recommended system pairing

For clean, consistent results, pair your chosen media with the Vaniman ProBlast 3 ESD and a compatible dust collector such as the StoneVac II. This combination provides stable ESD control, effective containment, and reliable airflow during rework.
