Non-Destructive Optical Film Thickness Measurement for Conformal Coatings and Parylene
The KR-FM20 is a precision optical film thickness monitor, designed to provide non-destructive, real-time measurement of conformal coating and Parylene layers.
Using advanced optical interferometry, the system delivers instant, repeatable results without the need for destructive testing. This makes the KR-FM20 an ideal tool for production process control, R&D, and quality assurance across aerospace, automotive, medical, and electronics applications.

Why Use Conformal Coating Optical Film Thickness Measurement?
Thickness control is critical for conformal coatings. Too thin, and protection is compromised. Too thick, and weight, stress, or cost may increase. The KR-FM20 helps ensure coatings are always applied within specification.
✅ Non-destructive – measure films without cutting or damaging the substrate
✅ Fast and accurate – instant readings in microns, repeatable to ±0.5 µm
✅ Versatile – works for both wet-applied coatings and Parylene films
✅ Process control – document thickness for audits and compliance
✅ Portable design – compact and simple to integrate into production
How the KR-FM20 Works
The KR-FM20 uses optical interferometry to measure film thickness quickly and non-destructively. A beam of light is directed onto the coated surface, where it reflects off both the top of the coating and the interface with the substrate. The interference pattern between these reflections is analysed by the system software to calculate the coating’s thickness in microns.
Because the method relies on light reflection, it is highly effective for transparent coatings such as Parylene, as well as for liquid-applied conformal coatings. By coating flat reflective test coupons alongside assemblies, the KR-FM20 delivers precise thickness data that can be used to control and optimise coating processes.
Conformal Coating Optical Film Thickness Measurement Applications
Liquid Conformal Coatings
The KR-FM20 measures thickness on acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy, and silicone coatings. It provides immediate results during process development and production verification, reducing rework and ensuring consistency.
Parylene Coatings
The KR-FM20 is also widely used for Parylene film thickness measurement. By measuring on flat reflective coupons coated alongside PCBs, the system provides highly accurate data for thin transparent Parylene layers (5–50 µm typical). This approach is standard in the Parylene industry and ensures consistent process control.
