Non-Destructive Optical Film Thickness Measurement

For Conformal Coatings and Parylene

KR-FM20 is a precision optical film thickness monitor designed to provide non-destructive, real-time measurement of conformal coating and Parylene layers.

Using advanced optical interferometry, the system delivers instant, repeatable results without destructive testing. This makes KR-FM20 ideal for production process control, R&D, and quality assurance across aerospace, automotive, medical, and electronics applications.

Why Use Optical Film Thickness Measurement?

Thickness control is critical for conformal coatings. Too thin and protection is compromised; too thick and weight, stress, or cost may increase. KR-FM20 helps ensure coatings are applied within specification.

  • βœ… Non-destructive – measure films without cutting or damaging the substrate
  • βœ… Fast and accurate – instant readings in microns, repeatable to Β±0.5 Β΅m (application dependent)
  • βœ… Versatile – suitable for transparent liquid coatings and Parylene films
  • βœ… Process control – document thickness for audits and compliance
  • βœ… Portable design – compact and simple to integrate into production

How KR-FM20 Works

KR-FM20 uses optical interferometry to measure film thickness quickly, accurately, and without damaging the surface. A beam of light is directed onto the coated surface. Light reflects from both the coating surface and the substrate interface. The software analyses the interference pattern between these reflections and calculates coating thickness in microns.

Because the method relies on light reflection, it is especially effective for transparent coatings such as Parylene and many liquid-applied conformal coatings. By coating flat reflective test coupons alongside assemblies, operators can obtain precise thickness data and optimise process control with confidence.

Applications

Liquid Conformal Coatings

KR-FM20 measures thickness on acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy, and silicone coatings. It provides immediate feedback during process development and production verification, reducing rework and improving consistency.

Parylene Coatings

KR-FM20 is widely used for Parylene film thickness measurement. By measuring on flat reflective coupons coated alongside PCBs, the system provides highly accurate data for thin transparent Parylene layers (typically 5–50 Β΅m). This is a standard industry control approach for consistent deposition monitoring.
